Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza have blasted admission screening as a tool of segregation and released a plan to diversify the student population at NYC’s specialized high schools. This is an important first step, but they must know educators support taking swift action to desegregate our schools.
Add your name to our open letter calling on Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza to continue their efforts to desegregate public schools and remove the artificial barriers that purposely keep minority and low-income students out of high-performing schools.
As educators we are proud of being part of a public education system that promises to provide an excellent education to every student that walks into our schools. We believe it is a violation of that promise to have a system where 20 percent of schools have barriers to entry. We applaud the Mayor and Chancellor’s efforts to confront the history and status quo that allows this system to persist.
